What a small businesswebsite actually needs

Websites5 min read

Forget the feature lists. A good small business website does a handful of things brilliantly — here's what they are.

We talk to a lot of local business owners who feel like their website should be doing more, but aren't sure what 'more' means. The truth is that the best small business sites aren't complicated. They just get a few fundamentals exactly right.

1. It works brilliantly on a phone

Most of your visitors are on a phone, often on the move. Text should be readable without zooming, buttons easy to tap, and the important things — your number, your address, your booking button — never more than a thumb away.

2. It loads fast

Slow sites lose people before they've seen anything. Speed comes from good engineering: properly sized images, lean code and sensible hosting. It also helps how you appear in search.

3. The next step is obvious

Every page should answer the visitor's question: what do I do now? Book, order, call, get a quote. One clear action beats ten competing ones.

4. People can find it

  • A complete, up-to-date Google Business Profile.
  • Clear page titles and descriptions for every page.
  • Your location and services written the way customers search for them.

5. You can update it yourself

Prices change, menus change, opening hours change. You shouldn't need to email a developer to update them. A simple content editor saves time and keeps your site trustworthy.

Get these five right and your website starts working for you. Everything else is a bonus.
